Fall 2012 | Project 4 - Jeans

The jeans project is the last project of the Apparel I course. It is the most challenging pattern making and sewing project of the semester. We use all the skills learned from previous projects to make these jeans. The patterns were given to the students and many of them did pattern alterations. The next step was cutting and layout which took a long time since there are 10 pattern pieces. After sewing advance samples such as the Flat Fell, Welt, and Hong Kong Finish they began sewing their jeans. This project required everyone to sew a fly front, the most challenging application. Yokes, waist bands, and beltloops were applied last which meant all students had to use the industrial sewing machines to sew through all these layers. I hope you all enjoy viewing the hard work that went into each pair of these jeans. The students designed this classic wardrobe staple by choosing their own shade of denim fabric, topstitch threads, and other details like buttons or the back pocket design. Overall, this semester was great and filled with very creative students. They often pushed themselves to do more than required and I think that is amazing. This was an action packed semester and I hope that everyone keeps sewing! Have a great holiday season.

Fall 2012 | Project 3 - Vest

The third project in Apparel I is the vest. This project involves more advanced seams and seam finishes and uses woven fabrics. Some students really pushed their design further and added linings and one student even added set in sleeves and four pockets! They all began by tracing blocks and then creating their own patterns with seam allowance and pattern labeling. The next step involved the fabric layout which can be tricky for one sided or pile fabrics. They cut out the patterns pieces, practiced the seams on samples, and then proceeded to sew the garment. This was a fun project and as you can see from the photos below the students were very creative. There are additions such as fur, beading, studs, zippers, and even dinosaurs! Please view the designs below and stay tuned for the final project: Jeans.
