Fall 2011 | Project 4 - Jeans

The Apparel I class has completed the final project: denim jeans. This is an advanced project that includes learning 3 different types of zipper applications, advanced seam finishes, and deals with multiple pattern pieces. Not only are the sewing techniques challenging, the layers of denim that build up as the jeans take shape add an additional challenge. All of the students began with a basic jeans block and then created their own patterns. You can see that some students created a classic jean, others added a flare to the leg, and some created a skinny leg. The next step involved the fabric layout and cutting of the pattern pieces. Samples were sewn first before the student tackled the jean construction. The finishing touches are very individual and I hope you enjoy looking at each one. I am very proud of this class and I have truly enjoyed this semester. It has been a pleasure to work with all of the great designers in this course. I hope all of you continue to sew and design clothing. Have a nice holiday break!

Fall 2011 | Project 3 - Fur Vest with Lining

This project consisted of a fur vest with a lining. This is the first garment that the students have lined and it was an added challenge. The pile of the fur fabric also made this project more advanced than the first two. We began by creating patterns from a basic block using industry standard labeling. Next we took care to layout the pattern pieces correctly, pin, and cut all pieces of fur and lining. After sewing samples, we sewed the vest together. It is tricky sewing a pile fabric since it slides around easily, especially with the slippery lining. Overall the students did a great job. I hope that these fur vests are worn as the weather cools down!

Fall 2011 | Project 2 - Bias Cut Skirt

Our students have just finished with the bias cut skirt project. The bias grain line on fabric runs at a 45 degree angle. Cutting a garment on the bias gives it stretch and a soft drape. The students started by making patterns using blocks with industry pattern labeling. When the fabric was spread on the table, special care was taken to be sure we were able to identify the grain line. We spent time getting this perfect so our skirt would hang properly. After pinning our pattern pieces and cutting them, we sewed samples of advanced seams and seam finishes such as the french seam. We sewed the side seams of the skirt and then added the elastic waist band. The next step was the hem and the students did the best hems I have seen in all my years of teaching here at UT. Well done! Some students added a ruffle or flounce to the skirt. Please enjoy viewing this project and all the hard work that went into making this bias cut skirt.

Fall 2011 | Project 1 - T Shirt

The T Shirt Project is the first project in Apparel 1. Each student was asked to design a T Shirt and they were required to create a pattern, construct, and embellish this garment. They each began by tracing a pattern block of a basic T Shirt then they created patterns with seam allowance and industry standard labeling. The next step was to layout the fabric and pin each pattern piece down securely. They proceeded to cut each piece carefully and set them aside for sewing. The students used a basic straight stitch, an overlock or serger, and coverstitch machine for this project. They practiced each seam on samples before sewing the actual garment. The most challenging part would have to be sewing the collar since there is three layers of fabric to control under the machine at one time. The embellishments range from fabric paints, lace applique, beading and fabric weaving. Please enjoy viewing the hard work that went into each T Shirt. You can click on each image for a larger view. I am so proud of this group and I can't wait to see how they do on the next project.
